why do guys wear undershirts

Lookin Good In Layers

My new goal here is to have a daily, maybe every other day, piece of great advice for men on what to wear, when to wear it or how to wear it.  I think this will work because you guys need help.  Not always, but it may be good for you to look outside the box and see what others are doing before you pull something out of your closet.  As you already know, Gio has been in New York for fashion week.  He returned today and is ready to spill what he’s seen.  While it was the kick off for the fall 2010 line, there were still a lot of spring and summer looks designers were showing as well.  This included the wonderful art of layering.  For spring, layering is the only way to be prepared for the cold mornings and nights paired with the warm, sunny days.  The differences in temperatures betwen dawn, noon and dusk can be alarming, leaving the unprepared man confused and cold…or unhappy and hot.  So, if you learn the art of layering, as I like to call it, you can ensure that your upcoming days will be comfortable no matter what the weather.  It’s a smart and smart-looking way to wear your clothing.  Here’s some pointers.

1. Thinner layers first.

Your first selection should always be the lightest.  Why??  Because you want the lightest thing to be the last thing you would unlayer.  The goal of layering is to prevent yourself from being too cold or too hot, while still looking cool and sophisticated.  You’ll defeat the purpose if you’ve got  a heavy sweater on top of nothing.  Wear a cotton undershirt or a dress shirt first.  This also proves to be beneficial when it comes to the overall look of your ensemble.  It creates an overall sleek effect that just looks smart. Here’s what I’ve got…  or here’s how good a tshirt and blazer looks together.  And these are just basic.  Add a vest, v-necks are in right now. Add a tie or an Oxford over a tee.

2. Make sure you’re comfortable.

Layering is all about being comfortable.  Each piece is supposed to be an addition to something you already could wear on its own.  So if it doesn’t fit, don’t wear it.  Not only will you feel ridiculous, you’ll probably look it too.

3. Add some color, please.

I’m hardly one to talk about color, considering the majority of my closet blends into a giant sea of black and grey, but COLOR IS GOOD.  A light accent color to a black jacket and sweat shirt will really help to distinguish between the pieces you’re wearing and keep you from looking like you belong in 90s Seattle.

4. No shorts with long sleeves and jackets.

It’s just ridiculous.  Unless you’re on a boat. Or Colorado, and I don’t think you’re either.

Plus, socks are good with all shoewear.  If it’s chilly enough in the morning to layer, you may as well get some thinner socks to keep your toes from being miserable.  I like argyle.  Nobody likes cold feet.
