According to one of my previous articles, whenever a Southerner
says "Y'all see," off the road because they are
probably last words I ever going to say.

Well, I'm a Southerner. I lived in southeast
United States, but moved to the southeast of China. And I'm
to say the magic words:

Y'all see.

The word is "week". If you want to talk over a week,
as I wrote a few weeks ago, I'll use weeks. No apostrophe.
If I want to talk about something that belongs to a week as
"report last week, "I will use an apostrophe.

That's the rule. If it is a noun, s makes it plural and
apostrophe-s makes it possessive. It's that simple.

If I were still in the U.S., and I wanted one of these luxury
carved signs that are so common in southern gardens, it would
read "The LaRocca." The LaRocca what? Your lawn? Your sign?
That apostrophe makes it singular possessive, so LaRocca The
(a person) is surely claim ownership of something. If that
was not his intention, and punched him in an apostrophe, since it passes
an idiot.

What about plural possessive? Is it "the LaRocca house 'or
"the house of LaRocca's?" Well, it's no, because my wife is not
LaRocca and one we do not own a house. But for the sake of this
article, pretend you are and what we do.

In writing, Stephen King swears it is LaRocca's. When I was a
student, my teachers swore it LaRocca. As editor, I
heard the first U.S. standard and the second was UK standard.
And the answer is, I do not care. Just be consistent.

I once met an editor who said the spelling determines
pronunciation. She is an idiot. Spelling pronunciation is not all.
It is also the story. I will say if LaRocca LaRocca-ZZ 'or
LaRocca's. So will you.

Jump five paragraphs and read the word session. Noun. Note
I did not write pronoun. Just for fun, the rule of pronouns
and apostrophes are completely different.

It is a contraction of "it" and its is possessive. Who is
is a contraction of "who is" and whose is possessive. There is
is a contraction of "you" and theirs is possessive. Etc.
Possessive pronouns never use apostrophes. Su, who, you,
his, his, hers …

And there you go. Apostrophe usage made simple.
