T-Shirt Size Chart?

My shirt size is usually small: 34-36 (in the chest [inches) by American Apparel. I want to know what exactly the same size as for the ring spun combed cotton jersey. As for the jersey cotton combed call, the number of sizes appears to be a great jump and am a bit confused. American Apparel is giving the width around the shirt, the other company has listed as measuring the width of a hand, it would be 36 (just two)
