Can you use a font for a product? Or is it trademarked by its maker?

I am starting a t shirt company and I just needed to know, If I use a font that I downloaded online for free, do I need to ask the creator permission for it or can I just use it?

If it is a licensed font that you bought, that’s one thing, but you are asking about free fonts – which is a whole other can of worms.

There are a lot of fonts that are illegally free on the internet, and even those that are legally free will have different license agreements.

On some of the free font sites (dafont.com is a very good example) where you go to download the font, they will have a link to the designer/foundry (click on the designer’s name and an email address or website will probably show up at the top of the list of their fonts). Either carefully read the restrictions on their website or contact them directly.
