Shirts for winter?

I live in the cold north, and I’m looking for a certain undershirt that I can wear throughout the brisk, chilly winters. I’d like them made out of a material that is thinner, but breathable, and will keep body heat in. I think long underwear, thermal types would be too warm, because I’d like to wear them under my normal attire. Also, I’d like it to be longer so it can keep my middle warm too, not too picky about long or short sleeves. Any suggestions, and better yet, and places you’ve seen these types sold at?
