Wholesale: The possession of a large volume of stocks primarily for small retailers. The advantage to the dealer to deal with a wholesaler rather than the manufacturer is that large amounts of working capital not be invested in stocks.

By contrast, manufacturers prefer deal with wholesalers rather than small traders, because they are able to make bulk purchases. This reduces the administration and distribution problems physical and therefore the costs for the manufacturer.

As a small new company, it is unlikely that you will be able to convince a wholesaler to buy large quantities of unknown product. However, the main advantage of dealing with a wholesaler is that the costs involved in marketing the products directly consumers are assumed by the wholesaler.

Obviously, your profit margin will be reduced, but this must be offset by increases in sales volume and decrease of overheads of using this method.

The main problem with this form of distribution is that you can lose control over how the product is marketed to the consumer. As the overall level of consumer demand will ultimately affect its sales, poor distribution by the wholesaler and poor sales practices by retailers who sell to can have disastrous effects on your business. The same is, of course, partially true if you intend to set up as a wholesaler of yourself.

You can, of course, avoiding the wholesale and sell directly to retailers. You will find some of the problems associated with the sale wholesalers, but have the advantage of the background investigation of each dealer, in turn. To encourage retailers to make room for the sale of its products, you could consider offering period return.

Provide retailers an option to return products if they can not make the sale. Helping them reduce your risk, you can encourage them to maintain our products.

You can also offer in-store merchandising of a service where you would go into stores, help retailer ordering, the actions of his unit and also possibly supply exhibition stands and promotional material. This makes it a more attractive proposition to the shop and at the same time, allowing you to maintain some control over how the product is marketed to the consumer.
